Wrapping Books DIY and Filling A Cabinet

Do you remember at the beginning of school getting new textbooks?  And, wrapping them to protect them?  This dates me, I know.  Do they even have textbooks anymore???

Well, this is kind of like that if you are one of those who remember…

So you probably recognize this piece of furniture behind me in this post.IMG_4536We moved it out of the playroom/guest room to make room for a bed.  I had to fill it with something.  It looked so empty/dull!

I have all of these hardback books lying around from my pre-IPAD days.  What to do but wrap them!

I’ve seen the latest expensive decorating trend where you buy matching colored books for your shelves.  I thought I could remedy that by wrapping them.

I was thinking a cheetah or IKAT wrapping paper at first, but then went with white.  I thought it would bring out the blue and white pieces I have intertwined between the books.

If you do this, make sure you buy a high-quality wrapping paper.  With these books, I used two whole rolls of this! fullsizeoutput_2173.jpeg

First, remove old book covers if needed.fullsizeoutput_2175.jpegYou will need scotch tape, scissors and wrapping paper of your choice.fullsizeoutput_2176.jpegPlace book down where there is 1 1/2 inches on bottom and side. fullsizeoutput_2177.jpegLift up book onto its spine and flip over to other side.fullsizeoutput_2178.jpegNow cut 1 1/2 inches out and up.  Then cut 1 1/2 inches out and across the top of the book.  I guesstimated this.  It does need to be exact.fullsizeoutput_2179.jpegfullsizeoutput_217a.jpegfullsizeoutput_217b.jpegHold the book up on its spine in the middle of the cut piece of wrapping paper.  Cut two slits on either side of the spine at the top and bottom.fullsizeoutput_217c.jpegFold these in.fullsizeoutput_217d.jpegfullsizeoutput_217ePlace book on its spine on top of folded pieces.  Using one hand, hold all of the book up except one cover.  Place one cover down and fold top and bottom sides of wrapping paper in.  fullsizeoutput_217f.jpegFold corners in to make triangles.  Fold this piece into side pieces and tape at corners.  Repeat on the other side.fullsizeoutput_2180.jpeg*You must make sure you hold book up while you fold in the paper or the paper will tear when you close the book.fullsizeoutput_2181.jpegfullsizeoutput_2182.jpegfullsizeoutput_2183.jpegHere’s where I started placing inside cabinet.  I placed some upright and some down.  fullsizeoutput_2184.jpegfullsizeoutput_2185.jpegfullsizeoutput_2186.jpegI then added some blue and white pieces I had.fullsizeoutput_2187.jpegIMG_4760.JPGIMG_4761.JPGIMG_4762.JPGIMG_4764.JPGIMG_4765.JPGIMG_4766.JPGIMG_4768.JPGfullsizeoutput_21a9.jpegfullsizeoutput_21aa.jpeg

You could do this on any shelves you have, too!

Here are some other interesting papers you could use:  here//here//here//here here//here//here//and here!
