A Date Night in Fairhope

Every year, when we head to the beach, we break the trip up and stay in the Mobile, Alabama area.  Over the last couple of years, we have discovered that over the bay bridge from Mobile is an adorable bayside community called Fairhope.  It is THE modern-day Mayberry!  It is adorned with beautiful flowers and street lamps.  It has charming shops and restaurants.  And, we look forward to a date night here every year, as of recent, to start off our family vacation.  (Our kids like to drive down the next day in their own cars, so they have their own form of transportation at the beach.)

After a long journey of driving, Rourke, who does not let me drive, likes to “shake off the road dust” as he refers to it and get a cocktail first.  Being an Irish descendant, he usually likes to find the local Irish pub and grab a pint.  In recent years, we have gone here to McSharry’s.

But by word of mouth, this time, we tried out a new place called “Tongue and Groove.”  It is a craft cocktail joint with lots whimsical details.  EVERYTHING is made from scratch, from their simple syrup to homemade brandied cherries.  They even crush each drink’s ice in a special bag with a mallet.  Looking at the menu, I wanted to try EVERYTHING, but I hadn’t eaten in awhile and I thought I should just stick to wine.  I definitely wanted to come back and try one of these libations!  FYI.. they do not advertise.  They don’t even have a sign out front, so you really have to look for it!

So for dinner, we LOVE the Camellia Cafe and Dragonfly.  The Camellia Cafe has won several awards.  It is in the $$$ price range and has a great wine selection.  Dragonfly used to be this little hidden taco hub.  And, they got so popular, they moved to a newer, bigger location around the corner.  It is in $$ price range and has really great, different tacos.  And if you are a sushi fan, and if you are willing to wait awhile, Master Joe’s is really good.

The owner of the Tongue and Groove recommended us go the Thyme on Section for dinner.  So, we decided to give it a try.  fullsizeoutput_d31.jpegfullsizeoutput_d32.jpegfullsizeoutput_d36.jpegfullsizeoutput_d37.jpegfullsizeoutput_d38.jpegfullsizeoutput_d3b.jpegfullsizeoutput_d33.jpegRourke and I started out with the corn and crab salad with grilled bread.  It was fresh and delicious.  Rourke has been on a pork belly kick lately, and when he saw the Pork Belly Burger, he knew what he wanted.  It was excellent, and I couldn’t stop eating his truffle fries!!  I went with the Shrimp Monpongo, and it was good. It had a combination of very different ingredients, and if you do not have adventurous taste buds, I wouldn’t recommend it.  As you can see from the menu, the prices are in the $$$ range.  The service was excellent and we will definitely go back again.

So for our end of the evening, we sometimes grab coffee at this quaint little coffee shop slash bookstore.

The shops are really great.  I love this one.

Or, sometimes we head to the town’s Windmill Market.  They have local vendors and artists inside and usually a live band outside.

But tonight, we had dessert on our minds, and we had heard about an Italian cafe, called R Bistro that we wanted to try.

It is a full-service restaurant but they serve homemade Italian dessert and cappuccino at the bar.  So we headed in to see what this was all about….

As you can see, we had some decisions to make.  Let’s just say that there was a lot of sharing, and when we were done, I felt like a stuffed PIG!  It was all so decadent with such an aesthetic quality.

Well, it was time to head to the car, and we both decided that we had a beautiful evening exploring one of our favorite places once more. I wonder what’s in store for next year???

I hope you can swing by this area of the south the next time you are headed to the beach.
